We are a child-friendly church, blessed with children of all ages regularly attending. During the first part of our Sunday services (during which we mainly sing), children are encouraged to join in by playing percussion instruments, and drawing materials are provided for those who do not wish to take part.
At approximately 11.20 children leave the main Sunday service to go to their ‘Little Starz’ Sunday School classes. Their time in Sunday School is divided into four sessions:
Praise Time - the children sing - usually with actions to make the session fun. Both well established and new songs are learned and the songs from Sunday School are incorporated from time to time into our main church services.
Powerful Word - during this time the children learn a memory verse from the bible.
Prayer Time - one or two children each week are given the opportunity to read a prayer or to say their own prayer.
Planned Lesson - each lesson explores a different Bible passage, using a session aim to help the children discover more about God and respond to him. All sessions are supported by a colourful work sheet and typically include an ‘introduction activity’ to encourage each child to feel part of the group. A ‘Bible activity’ which often includes a play or craft to bring the chosen Bible passage to life and to assist the children in understanding. A ‘putting it into practice activity’ which could be discussion, a word search or quiz to encourage the children to remember, respond to and apply what they have learnt into their every day lives.
During the planned lesson time, babies and small children play in the ‘Our World Nursery’ facility which forms part of MBC, whilst the older children split into groups according to their age.
The children also produce their own weekly ‘Starzlight Newz’ newsletter.
At approximately 12.15 children go back into church to join in with the final hymn.
Children are an active part of our church family
We encourage our young people to play an active role in church life. On the fourth Sunday of each month, the children stay in church throughout all of the Sunday morning service. During this time Meena, one of our Deacons and Junior Church Leader, leads us in ‘All Age Worship’ which actively involves the children in readings, prayer and sketches. When not involved in the service they do theme based craft which is later presented to the congregation.
Where there are five weeks in the month, the children also stay in church on the fifth Sunday. On these Sundays the children again do craft in church.
Materials used are provided by Scripture Union. Our Sunday School teachers are all members of MBC and part of our church family. Where children are initially anxious we are more than happy for parents to stay with their children until they settle.
As a church family we believe that a child should be allowed to start taking communion at whatever age they and their family feel is right for the individual. Accordingly, our young people return to the church service from their Sunday School classes to sit as a family group during communion.
Keith, our Minister, would be happy to discuss this matter further.
